This is the question that I ask architects and planners when looking at a new site.
Because they need to consider the land as a real place, not just as lines on a drawing or computer screen.
Often the idea is met with incredulity or bemusement.
Many professionals nowadays see urban design as spatial relationships manipulated through CAD programmes.
It seems that contemporary planning and architecture has become disconnected from the earth.
Real place-making has to start with the essence of the place itself.
It is crucial to spend as much time as possible getting to know the character of the site.

Holistic City Software’s “major new upgrade to their conceptual urban masterplanning CAD application” may be useful but we need to be designing real places for real people, not Sims.
